A companion work to the Handbook of birds of the world [HBW].  This series illustrates and describes all the mammal species of the world and is to be completed in nine volumes. Detailed family entries include sections on systematics; morphology; communication; food and feeding; breeding; movements, home range and social organization; relationship with humans; status and conservation. Species accounts include sections on taxonomy; subspecies and distribution; habitat; food and feeding; movements, home range and social organization; breeding; status and conservation; bibliography. As with HBW the volumes are extensively illustrated with superb colour plates and colour photographs as well as distribution maps. This will end up as the greatest modern reference on the world’s mammals and a worthy successor to Walker.
