Australian Pigface and Pigweed: Tasty Native Food Plants – a Long Tradition

To many, Pigface is just a weed in the garden; to a naturopath it is medicine and to indigenous people and livestock, it is a food.  To a modern chef, it is still an adventure!

This booklet looks primarily at the genera Carpobrotus, Disphyma and Sarcozona from the family Aizoaceae.  This booklet outlines the features used for identifying each genus and tips on cultivation. These plants are a very important source of food and water for animals and insects and even humans throughout history. They are common in sandy or disturbed soils, often found in coastal areas.
