Drawing widely on historical and contemporary sources, the book describes how changing land use has affected the bird fauna, identifies shortcomings in national conservation polity, and outlines conservation needs. The text is augmented by 48 colour plates, a detailed map and gazetteer of all localities mentioned in the text, and a list of key birdwatching sites.
