This book is a guide to the birds of the Yarra River and its tributaries. This is an area of some 4,000 square kilometres stretching from the mountains to the sea. The order of habitats described generally follows the river on its journey from the headwaters in the mountain forests to the city of Melbourne and the bay. With each habitat description there is a selection of birds most likely to be seen. Forty-two of the better birding areas are described.
The latter half of the book is an annotated list of the species that have been recorded in the Yarra River catchment. Accompanying each species are estimates on their status in the catchment, their preferred habitat and the best places to look for them.
